Mini: Dreams and Fears
We all have dreams and aspirations. However, are they dreams that you’re doing something about or simply day dreams? And is it fear that might be holding you back? Fear of failure or even fear of success? Or fear or something else altogether!

Hi there and welcome to this week’s episode of the curious coach podcast. I’m back after having had a break for the last month from creating podcasts and other content and now I’m feeling recharged, refreshed and full of hopes and dreams for the future ahead.
And that got me thinking. We all have dreams. However, for many, dreams simply remain just that – dreams. They’re things we turn to when we’re feeling down, or annoyed about parts of our life we’re not happy with or when work might become boring, mundane or burdensome. We may dream of winning the lottery, getting a promotion, moving countries, finding a soul mate, launching a business, losing weight or discovering our passion – just to name a few examples.
Whilst dreams can be a north star that motive and inspire us in a particular direction, they can also become a source of frustration and resentment, especially if we feel we are stuck.
When it comes down to it, in order for our dreams to stand a chance of being realised, we need to take some form action. Unless of course we want to rely on luck, however it’s up to us to initiate the actions that will move us towards our dreams. However, we may not realise that we are actually getting in our own way – as one of the reasons for inaction, is fear.
It might be fear of failure, fear of success, fear of what other people will think of us, fear of what we might have to give up, fear of unintended consequences – and so on. When we start to uncover them, we might realise that we have lots of unconscious thoughts swirling around in our heads about why we shouldn’t try and change.
And this isn’t surprising. For our own survival, there’s something called a negativity bias. It’s where we’re more likely to notice threats rather than rewards, and it’s to protect us. However, when it comes to us wanting the courage to act on our dreams, it just gets in the way!
And here’s the challenge for you this week. Take a moment to reflect on the dreams and aspirations that you have – and then be curious about what you might be afraid of. Come up with all of the reasons why fear might be stopping you. Once you do, reflect on each of them and ask yourself what assumptions you might be making that is leading to these fears. Become really curious. And as you do, ask yourself what is the realistic worst-case scenario – chances are, it’s not as bad as you might think!
After you do that – what is the first step that you’re going to take towards making your dream a reality? And as always, I’d love to hear what you come up with – so please don’t hesitate to share on LinkedIn or by dropping me an email to [email protected]
Thanks for listening, and as always, stay curious!
