Whilst it’s great to have a dream about your goals and aspirations for 2021, who do you need to become in order to achieve them?   This is my challenge for you this week as we set off with hope into 2021!

Hi there and welcome back to The Curious Coach Podcast for this first episode of 2021.  As we set off into the new year, it’s only natural to be thinking about the year ahead.  To have hope, hope that, this year will be different, and that seems even more …. Necessary …  given the year we have all just faced.

And from that place of hope, we start to dream and think about all our goals and aspirations for the year ahead.  Getting fit, losing weight, changing jobs, learning a new skill or whatever your imagination has conjured up.   

Chances are, each and every one of us, can conjure up some vision of what our life would be like once we’ve achieved those specific goal.  Perhaps you want to run a marathon and you can imagine yourself crossing the finish line and how you’ll feel as you realise what you’ve just accomplished.  Or losing weight and now fitting into a particular item of clothing, and really imagining how that will make you feel, or what you might hear others say about how now.

Visioning in this way, can be really powerful to help us connect with and motivate ourselves towards those goals.  However, to increase your chances of success, can you also start to envision who you had to become first.

Now, what do I mean by this?  For example, if your vision was seeing yourself thinner, and wearing different clothes that made you look fabulous, also allow yourself to envision the steps you had to take to achieve that.  And when you see yourself taking those steps, how is that person being different from the you of today?  How have they changed so that could achieve that goal?   For example, did you become a person who had a different relationship with food?  Who wasn’t using food as an emotion reward?  Or a person who was choosing to be active in the evening rather than curling up in front of the TV with a glass of wine every night?

If we only envisage what our life will be like, when we’ve achieved a goal, then we’re basically dreaming.   Sometimes dreams do come true, and more often than not, they simply stay dreams and then turn into regrets.  However, by envisaging the person you had to become, in order to realise a dream, will move you closer to taking the necessary steps towards making it a reality. 

That’s my challenge for you this week.  See yourself in the future achieving your goal for 2021, and also see the steps you had to take to get there, and who you had to become in order to do this.  Reflect on what you noticed and identify the first step you’re now going to take.
