Mini: Waking Up
How do you start your day when the alarm goes off? This week’s mini episode is all about being curious about what happens in that moment and seeing whether you can choose to respond with a different thought.

Hi there and welcome to this week’s mini episode of The Curious Coach Podcast. This week’s reflective challenge is about what happens first thing in the morning. Chances are your day starts something like this: [f/x of Alarm clock beeping]. Yes, it’s your morning alarm!
Now, many of us probably use our phone. Maybe some people even have an old fashioned alarm clock! Regardless, there’s usually something that will stir you out of your slumber and bring you back into the consciousness of a new day. Now, the challenge is about noticing your reaction to that alarm. There’s probably 3 ways you might react.
The first way might be to jump out of bed, turn your alarm off, and tell yourself that you’re ready to face the day, and off you go! Now, if you’re anything like the rest of us, you might have a different reaction! It might be, sleepily stirring, and going, “oh no, it can’t be time to get up already!”. And then you drag yourself out of bed, still half asleep and start to wake up as you’re walking into the bathroom.
Another way might be, you fumble around, frantically trying to find the snooze button, and then gentle drift off back to sleep, having hit the snooze button, until the cycle repeats again. And this cycle may go on for 5 or 6 times over the course of the next 30,40,50 or 60 minutes, before you eventually drag yourself out of bed.
So, my challenge for you is to start to notice your reaction to the alarm clock. The challenge is that our reaction can become so ingrained and so subconscious, that we may not even recognise what we’re doing. So start to notice it. And having noticed it, see if can you do something different?
Rather than hitting the snooze button all the time, tell yourself, “Actually… there’s so much that I want to do today, I can’t wait to get started!”, and off you go! Or maybe tell yourself… “Hey, it’s a new chance to try something different” or, “I’m going to meet with a friend today, and I can’t wait!!”. Whatever it happens to be and whatever works for you, see if you can change that thought that you have first thing in the morning when the alarm clock goes off and choose to react differently to it.
Once you’ve made that choice be curious about how that impacts the rest of your day. Do you notice any difference in your energy levels? In your attitude? In how you’re walking into the bathroom in the morning? Or in how you’re showing up in work? Or for your first meeting? Simple be curious!
