Hello and welcome to this weekly mini episode of the curious coach podcast. In these mini episodes I bring a reflective question each week for you to reflect on. This week’s question is about procrastination and to reflect on what have you been putting off?
For me I had the idea about a month ago to do a video episode of The Curious Coach Podcast and as soon as I had the idea I started to make a list of all the things that I would have to do first; such as figuring out how to record it, figuring out how to put subtitles on it, how to release it as both an audio podcast and video podcast, and wonder about people on iTunes and would they get both versions and how would that work? And also how would I record it in terms of the space, I’d need somewhere with a nice background and it would have to be tidy and everything else. And also even practical things like when I record the audio version I would script it out and put some thought into what I wanted to say. Then I’d record it a number of times to get it just right. Obviously, I couldn’t do that if I was using video because that would be very unnatural.
So having come up with this idea and all these reasons, the end result was… I didn’t do anything about it. Until I went for a run this morning and then I realised, with all those reasons I’ve put up and those barriers that have put in place, relate back to the fact that I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I wanted it to be perfect.
So having realised that, well, if I keep wanting it to be perfect and I keep putting all these obstacles in place, I’ll never actually record it, so you know what? I just said, ”yeah I’m going to go for it!”. Who cares whether it’s perfect or imperfect? Better to try it and learn from it and see what happens. So, if you’re watching this video on LinkedIn or my website… Yeah!!! I finally did it and stopped procrastinating!
But enough about me… the question is for you: what have you been procrastinating about? What have you been putting off actually doing? Start to be curious about what is it that’s causing that procrastination; is it a fear of failure? a fear of what other people will think? A sense of it has to be perfect? Or something else? So figure out what it is you wanted to do, and why you haven’t done it yet… simple, right?
