Mini: Saying No!

Hello and welcome to this weekly mini-episode of The Curious Coach Podcast.  This week’s episode is about reflecting on this simple question:  What do you need to say no to?

If you’re anything like me, you might find yourself saying “yes” to lots of things.  Taking on more work, helping others, agreeing to be somewhere, to do something and so on. We can find ourselves living a very enjoyable, packed and busy life by saying “yes” to all these things.

However, living a packed and busy life doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re living the life you want to live; one where you’re being congruent to your own desires, passions and sense of purpose.

So my challenge for you this week is to reflect on the things that you need to say “no” to.  The things that might be an energy drain or that might keep you busy and occupied but which don’t move your closer to where you want to get to.  By identifying things you could say “no” to, you’re making more space for things you could say “yes” to.  And these are the things that will move you more in the direction you want to go, and how you want to ‘be’ in the world.

And when thinking about this, it’s not simply about saying “yes’ or “no” to external thoughts; it can also be saying “yes” or “no” to yourself.  As a simple example, do you want to say “yes” to yourself when you feel like sitting down and watching TV for the entire evening, if you said ‘No’ instead, what could you then say ‘yes’ to?  Of course, there are times when saying ‘yes’ to sitting down and watching TV all evening is the right answer – and that’s ok.  It’s not about something  being right or wrong, good or bad – it’s simply about being conscious about the things and requests we say yes and no to!

So that’s my challenge for you this week.  Simply reflect on whether there are things you could be saying ‘no’ to, and as a result, what does this allow you to say ‘yes’ to instead.
