This week I reflect on changes. How often do we put off making changes, and then figuring it will always be quicker than we plan and forgetting to give ourselves time to adapt to the changes!

Hello and welcome to this weekly mini-episode of the Curious Coach podcast. This week my reflection was triggered by changing an old set of curtains around the bay window at the front of our house. The curtains were quite old, they’d been there for ages and the curved curtain track that held them up had been hanging on by a thread for quite some time.
We’d always talked about changing them and never quite seemed to get around to it. Instead, we’d talk about waiting until we redecorated the rest of the living room. Each time another curtain hook broke or something happened, I’d temporarily patch it again to keep those curtains working for another little while. In many ways, we knew a change was due and we just kept delaying it – finding reasons why things should stay as they are.
Well, today was the day. We were triggered into action and the set of curtains and the old curtain track were taken down and thrown out. Rather than wrestle with a new curved curtain track and all the fun that that would entail, we opted for three roller blinds instead. So after a quick shopping trip to get the blinds, we tackled the job of putting them up.
It was quite amazing in one way. Taking down the curtains changed the whole appearance of the bay window. And in the process of putting up the blinds, we also temporarily took down the net curtains. The light shone brightly into the living room – transforming it, the appearance of the window and the entire room.
About 90 minutes later, our ten minute job was complete! It’s funny how I always underestimate how long some changes will take. Sometimes we expect a change to be straight forward and simple but usually things end up more complicated than they first appeared. And then, having made the change, it’s funny how it also takes time to get used to the changes. Every time I walk into the room and look at the bay window, it looks so different without the curtains. And then at night with the blinds down it looks different again. Despite the curtains having seen better days, I still haven’t gotten used to them not being there – I kinda miss them in a small way.
But over time, I’ll quickly get used to the fact that the curtains are gone and that we now have blinds. That’s what we do – we adapt and we adjust. But it does take time.
So maybe that’s the reflection question for you this week, what changes do you need to make in your life? Or perhaps, what changes are you putting off, that you know you need to make? And what are you doing to prepare for those changes? To give yourself time to make the change and also get used to how things will be after the change has happened?
Change can be uncomfortable, but we are also remarkable at adapting. And if you think about change within a work setting, are you responsible for initiating changes? And if so, are you giving those around you time to adapt? Is there anything, aside from being patient, that you do to help that process?
Anyway, that’s it for this week. I hope you enjoy reflecting and I’d love to hear how you got on, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch by sending me an email to firstname.lastname@example.org that’s stephen with a p.h.
