Hello and welcome to this weekly mini-episode of the Curious Coach podcast.  This week’s reflective question is about routines.  And the question is this:  are my routines helping me achieve what I want in life?

This thought occurred to me after being away on holiday for 12 days.  During that break, I went away and embodied a new routine where I’d get up, go for a run, then spend the day by the poolside reading, before having dinner and going for a walk in the evening.  It was definitely a change from my normal routine and just what I needed:  a chance to switch off and recharge the batteries.

However, when I came back, I was exhausted.  It’s amazing how tiring it can be doing nothing other than trying to switch off from work and take time out to relax.  But I also realised that the challenge is trying to get back into my normal routines.

And this led me to reflect on whether my routines are actually helping me or hindering me.  For example, it can be very easy to fall into a routine where you’re not always organised to eat healthily by cooking fresh, nutritious food.  As a result, you can fall into a routine of eating fast food or convenience food.

And when you break your normal routine, by going away on something like a holiday, you also have a choice when you return.  Do you simply revert back to your normal routines or do you use the opportunity to try and do something different instead.

And by doing something different, what impact will that have?  For example, being more organised and planning your week’s meals in advance and by having gone shopping for the ingredients, can mean you eat more healthily, which can lead to you having more energy, feeling better about yourself, potentially losing weight and maybe lots of other benefits.

But this is the challenge with routines.  Until we break them, we don’t necessarily realise that we’re even doing them.  So that’s my challenge for you this week.  Take a moment to reflect on the routines that you do every day or every week, and be curious about whether they are helping you get what you want from life, or whether they are trapping you in a rut instead. What would happen if you changed any of these routines and tried something different?
